The Open Directory - DMOZ

The Open Directory is a volunteer based guide to the web. It is often referred to as DMOZ. So if it is volunteer based why should you submit your website to the Directory?
Many of the major search engines including Google use the directory as a source for its search results. That is why many site developers believe that a listing in the open directory is essential.

Submission to the directory is free so it won't hurt to at least submit your site. However, whilst it is free, getting your site listed in the directory may take time. The editors are volunteers and as such do not always respond quickly to new submissions. The stated time for submission on the website is two weeks to a month. If your submission is not on the directory after this time you may try using the open forum to solve the problem at the following link http://resource-zone.com/ . Here you can post requests in the forum asking why your site has not been listed. In addition to this you may try submitting your site again.

An alternative answer to this may be to try and locate the editor of the relevant section. The editors generally operate a business that is in a different field. If you can locate them a polite email may encourage them to respond if you believe that there has been a delay. On that point it is important to remember that the editors do the work voluntarily and may not appreciate being hassled.

Submitting to DMOZ

Submitting to the open directory is quite straight forward and can be done by following these steps-
• Go to the open directory home page http://dmoz.org/
• Read through the guideline provided in the site to make sure that you do not violate any of the basic rules (i.e. Submitting mirror sites)
• Select a category that best fits your website content. It is important that you select a suitable category to avoid your submission being rejected.
• Once you have found the category that best fits click on the ‘suggest URL' at the top of the screen
• Complete all of the relevant details requested, read the terms of use and click on the submit site button.
• Check back on the directory from time to time to see if your site has been submitted.
