Google - Advice and Information

The Google search engine is arguably the most popular within the UK . This makes getting your site listed an important part of your business promotion.

How does Google work?

Google is an automated search engine. It uses spiders/robots to crawl through the vast amounts of sites and information that is currently on the web. When your site is submitted to Google or another site links to it the spiders will visit it at random occasions and index the content of the site. This information is then used to include your site when a search is done on relevant key words. In addition to this Google will take a ‘snap shot' of your site at the time and keeps a ‘cached' version of the site until it visits the site again. Whilst this automated technology can be extremely efficient for finding results amongst all the other sites available, it can also provide some random results that do not reflect what you searched for.

How to get your site listed

The answer on first inspection is simple. You can submit your site to Google directly by using the following link http://www.google.co.uk/addurl.html . On this web page all you need do is enter your full web address including the prefix http:// and add a comment for your site. An example of this for a wedding gift company may be ‘Wedding gifts for special occasions'.
It is also possible to become listed on Google without actually submitting the site. This can be done by creating links to your site from other websites. When Google searches the internet it will find the details of your site and begin to list it naturally.
Alternatively you can pay to get your site in the search engine through Google AdWords. This is essentially a pay per click (PPC) service. A paid listing will place you in their listings depending on the amount of money you are prepared to pay compared to your competitors.
Once your site is listed the challenge really begins. How to get to the top of the Google search engine? For more information relating to this read our Search Engine Optimisation pages.
