Domain Names - Overview
Overview
If you want a website you will need a domain name, also known
as a web address or URL (Uniform Resource Locator). This is the
information someone looking for your website will enter into their
Internet web browser to find your website.
Domain names can be registered in two ways. The first and most
popular option is to register a domain name of your choice which
you will more than likely have to pay for, for example
“www.yourdomainname.co.uk”.
The alternative is to register a Subdomain which means you effectively
share someone else domain name. For example, if this website offered
Subdomains then your domain name would be
“www.directadvice.co.uk/yourdomainname/”
Subdomains are often free and include some basic web hosting facilities
to put your website on the internet. They are however less professional
and only really suited to personal or hobby websites. Commercial
business websites should have their own domain name to give a
professional image. This will also allow you to establish number
of email address using your own domain name, for example
“sales@yourdomainname.co.uk”.
and
"bob.jones@yourdomainname.co.uk"
This gives your company a professional image rather than using
someone else's domain name or one of the free email providers
such as @yahoo.com or @hotmail.com
