Domain Name Registration and Cost
How
To Check The Availability Of A Domain Name and Registering
Most companies that offer domain name registration services have
a free online domain name checking system. You simply enter your
preferred name and it will search most available suffixes and
provide the results. If the name is already in use you can often
click on the “who is” information to get some basic
information about the owner of the domain name.
To find an agent which will allow you to search for available
names do a quick search on your preferred search engine.
Cost
The cost of registering a domain name varies from one agent to
another but as a general guide a .co.uk domain will cost between
£5 and £15, for .com expect to pay between £10
and £25 for a one year registration.
Some companies supply domain names free of charge but you should
look carefully at their terms and conditions before accepting
any special offer. There may be conditions which tie your domain
name to them and force you to use other services such as hosting
with them. This may be acceptable for your circumstances but make
sure there are no excessive transfer penalties if you do decide
to move to another company in the future for services such as
hosting your website.
You will have to renew the registration each year or you can secure
the domain for several years at the start and often for a discounted
price.
